The Fort Colville Gun recently received a funding award from the NRA Foundation to help buy a Battue-style target thrower for their 5-stand sporting clays course. Sporting clays is the closest thing to actual field shooting of all shotgun sports. Rather than having clay birds thrown from standardized distances and angles as with skeet or trap, sporting clays courses are designed to simulate the hunting of ducks, pheasants and other upland birds, and even rabbits. The battue is a wafer-thin, flat target that can be presented as loopers, crossing or quartering targets. The Battue is faster through the air because of its design but is less aerodynamically stable, so as it slows, it rolls into a vertical position and falls rapidly. The addition of the battue target thrower completes the style of target presentation standard on most 5-stand courses and allows club shooters, including youth competitors, the chance to practice with this unique style of target.
